It will be impossible to make the new cut into grids 45-49 down to theta until brush is removed. To allow the students to get used to excavating, a small (5-7 cm) cut was made in eta/51. A very few fragments of pottery and terracotta were found. A white mold substance was prevalent throughout the cut.

After some brush was removed a topsoil cut was made in zeta-eta/47 down to a level of approximately 17cm. A tree and stump group made it impossible to clear the grids entirely. Very little tile of pottery was found in this cut.A second cut was begun and quickly yielded a large chunk of plaster (at a depth of 30 cm) in the eastern part of the unexcavated southern half of grid eta/47. The cut was halted so that this small area could be swept down for a better view. It appears we have come down to just above the previously (1984) excavated level in the horther half of zeta, grids 46-47 (see

CT I). In 1984 this half grid was never ascertained as floor but labelled "possibly floor." At this point it seems that it is indeed floor. Above the floor level in the southern half of zeta there is a large massing of plaster. (Many large pieces of plaster were found in this same area in 1984.)

A plastic sheet was placed in grids epsilon/48-49 to protect a small tile fall on the edge of the floor. [Photo of small tile hanging off edge of floor - plaster packing below] As the edges of that sheet were emerging from beneath the dirt fill, it was decided to remove the sheet and let the tiles "breathe." Although damp, the tiles and the edgeof the floor that were covered remain intact. It will be helpful to use this edge as a point of reference while uncovering the rest of the floor.

As more of the dirt is swept away from where the plastic covering was pulled off the tiles it appears that the floor or perhaps a heavy packing of plaster continues out from under the tiles. As the soil is still too damp, we will have to wait to excavate in this area.

Work was done clearing the floor in grids epsilon - zeta/48-49 and arond the column base in zeta - eta/48-49. The dirt fill has become very hard packed over the year, and the soil is still too damp to uncover all of the floor. The cleaning down to the plaster level in grid zeta/47 was continued. This area, full of fairly large tree roots, yielded a small amount of tile and a few small fragments of pottery. The plaster appears to continue throughout the southern half of zeta, but there is a drop off down to dirt level in grid eta.

The stump group in the corner (northeast) of zeta - eta/147 was cleaned down. Some small

plaster chunks were found, and at the bottom of the cut there appears to be a continuation of the heavy plaster layer uncovered in the western section of zeta/147. A few fragments of redware, the same fabric that was found in such abundance in T-25, 1984, were uncovered. The possibilities of finding a complete profile this year look promising.

No finds.
