Yesterday afternoon's cut to 70 cm in J was completed in J-K/79. The soil was absolute gravel with many gray-yellow stones and similarly colored soil. Larger stones were encountered too, especially in J/79, which lies beside huge stones in J/80 - these jut out of last year's baulk. Some tile was found and one pithos rim, but these seem to come up around the tree stump in K/78 and may have been pushed up from a lower stratum. Judging from the baulk, we are very close to a reddish, plaster-rich stratum.
A second cut was made that left K/78 at 60-65 cm and J/78-79 at 70-75 cm. This cut brought us directly on top of the red-brown stratum, which occasionally cropped up, such as in the trench corner at J/78. Around the stump, soil was brown too. Generally, however, the soil remained the yellow-gray, rock-filled soil encountered earlier. J/79 continued to be full of large stones, but so large as that in J/80.
When the new soil was encountered, pottery and tile were found, but not in abundance.
The yellow-gray rocky soil produced little of anything. The morning's work produced one large full cassetta of tile. Plaster began to come up in the red-brown stratum, but only small quantities. Pieces of burned wood came up as well.

Another 10 cm cut was made in J-K/78. At the southernmost side of meter K/78, this cut was in red-brown soil with bits of plaster and charcoal. This stratum apparently dipped as it moves northward because it disappeared until the northern edge of J/78. In between, the old yellow-gray rocky soil prevailed. One piece of bronze came up in K/78 in the red-brown soil. Pottery and tile also came up, but nothing too noteworthy.
Work stopped early because of rain.
