Drawing of trench
The trench is surrounded by trees to all sides but there is only one tree in the trench. After opening photos and elevations were taken, excavation began. We began with a pick pass across the trench, moving from west to east. Soil is dark brown and filled with grass and tree roots: we are in a humus layer. Soil was hand sorted with trowels in the trench. There are many small rocks present in the trench but relatively few fragments of tile or ceramics. However, during the first pick pass, a piece of iron slag (Find #1) and a bronze tack (Find #2) were found, along with an iron tack (Find #3).
Work ended early due to rain.
