Daily Log

July 19, 2001

Having found 2 rocks by the stump in the northeast corner of locus 23, we defined around them with trowels while picking the resto f the trench.  While troweling, we found one more rock by the stump but unfortunately no other rocks were found.  If in fact these three new rocks are a turn in the "wall," we decided to put in an extension south of locus 23 to check if there were more rocks.

There was a piece of ridgepole recovered from locus 23.  Material recovered for the day was:

  • Terracotta: 2 latte boxes
  • Pottery: 15 pieces, 2 coarseware, 2 orange impasto, 11 impasto

The new extension, locus 24, spans from 271-273 E and 277-278 S.  Opening depths for locus 24 were:

  • 271 E 277 S: 56 cm b.d.
  • 273 E 277 S: 52 cm b.d.
  • 271 E 278 S: 60.5 cm b.d.
  • 273 E 278 S: 52 cm b.d.
  • Center: 59 cm b.d.

Locus 24 has dark brown topsoil, with heavy organic content and extensive root systems.  There is also a slope from west to east.  Pick passes were put in until new soil was hit.  No rocks were visible, but a diagnostic rim piece was recovered.  Material recovered for the day was:

  • Terracotta: 1 1/4 latte boxes
  • Pottery: 25 pieces, 3 coarseware, 2 orange impasto, 20 impasto

Final closing depths for locus 24 were:

  • 271 E 277 S: 66.8 cm b.d.
  • 273 E 277 S: 61.1 cm b.d.
  • 271 E 278 S: 67.6 cm b.d.
  • 273 E 278 S: 65.1 cm b.d.
  • Center: 68.4 cm b.d.

The opening depths of locus 25 are the same as the closing depths of locus 24.  Locus 25 has a light brown soil with less root systems and less organic content than locus 24.  Pick passes were put in, keeping an eye out for rocks.  A piece of ridgepole was recovered.  No rock

were found, but we hit bedrock and the rest of the day was spent exposing and defining the bedrock.  Material recovered for the day was:

Terracotta: 1 latte box Pottery: 39 pieces, 1 coarseware, 7 orangeware, 31 impasto
