  • Find # 1
  • Stratum C in the extreme NE corner of the trench
  • Very small black votive vase with 2 legs visible and possibly a second (Film 2)

Trench measures 9 m x 2m; almost parallel to agger and trench runs 50 degrees NE.

Stratum A: With top soil and contains assorted broken tile, sherds, and some bones.

Stratum B: In N and S parts of the trench.  Soild contains some assorted tile, sherds, and bones as before, but a new element in the soil itself: white fragments, possible calcareous appear.  Underlies stratum A.  Also overlies the wall and over the S tiles.

Stratum C: Only in N part of trench.  Under A and B and overlays the tiles in N section.  Yellow packed clay over and within the tiles.  Pottery is present and a few tiles.

Stratum D: Immediately under the surface in soil with carbon present in places and burned clay in others. Relatively dark soil and fairly compact; the soil is almost purple in color and found only in the extreme S part of trench. Few tiles were found in this level and immediately below appared the yellow packed floor level. Pottery and bones also present. Many bricks were found in this in trench 1E.

Stratum E: Hard yellow packed floor level found in both N and S parts of the trench underlying the tiles.

Trench 1 was taken down to the Stratum E in the entire trench except for the wall area which cuts the trench diagonally. This wall seems not to be

perpendicular to the appex. Terracotta tiles were found both to the N and S of the wall; those in the N seem to go under or into the wall while those to the S had a distinct break of about 10cm. between wall and tiles. Only a very few tile fragments were over the wall.

The top of the wall which is about 36cm below ground level is about 8cm above the south floor level and 30cm above the N floor level.
