Munsell: 10 YR 2/2 - Very dark brown
Description:
Locus 35 is a highly compacted dark brown soil with inclusions of medium sized rocks, roots, and frequent pottery with a large amount of finewares. The layer is equal to Locus 28 and underlays the plaster floor surface of Locus 34. Locus 35 lies directly to the west of Locus 28 and was created in order to extend Locus 32 westward to investigate the extent of the red soil. It is 1.08 meters west of the 179 E line and roughly 0.5 meters north of the 71 S line. The locus is 2 meters long and one meter wide, and roughly 0.12 meters in depth.
Many fragments of fine ceramic were recovered from the locus. A fragment of incised fineware, possibly imported from Corinth, was recovered (PC20230095). When the locus was made level with Locus 32, it was closed and Locus 32 was extended to be two meters in width.
Like Locus 28, the color, compaction, and composition of the locus indicates that it may have functioned as a leveling course for the construction of the OC2/Workshop’s plaster floor. As they were found beneath the plaster floor, the ceramic finds recovered from the locus predate the construction of the building.
