The floor was cleaned for the first hour. In I-L/95 work continued clearing down to the level excavated in 1986 directly west, aqpproximately 60-50 cm. Basically the area was almost solid ‘galestra’ with virtually no terracotta or pottery found. One fine redware rim was discovered here. At the bottom of this cut some red and black burned material started to show up but still very little material. It might be noted that last year when the area to the east of the floor was excavated a layer of galestra was encountered before reaching a lower stratum of burn and terracotta (see AC V and AC VI summaries).

In L/85-86 the fill was removed to a level roughly equal to the true floor.

P.M.

Work was confined to uncovereing the unfired covertiles in T-26 for preliminary photographing [documenting state of preservation]. About ‘13-1/2 of the tiles to the north were uncovered of fill and the protective plastic lifted. Here many of the tiles did not look to have stood up well to plants , bugs and weather. There also may have been a little damage done in removing the fill and plastic. Ants have made anumber of nests in the tiles helping to further break them down. Plants, as with the floor, have lowered roots into the cracks in the tiles driving them wider apart and causing flaking and chipping. In general the tiles to the west around the footprint and letter tile seemed in a better state of preservation than those to the north and northeast.
