Summary of CD-5

Excavations in CD-5 must be evaluated on the basis of negative evidence.

  1. Top soil exists only to a level circa 10 cm below surface, possibly indicating extensive and continual erosion.  This of course does not bode well for collecting information pertinent to the Southeast Building or Poggio Civitate in general.
  2. The absolute lack of cultural material with the exception of small and badly worn allows no positive conclusions.  Negative interpretative remarks would assign this to the above mentioned erosion.

Of note and possibly worth further study and interpretation is the significant divergence in soil types represented by 1989 CD trenchs CD-5 and CD-6.  A study of this difference may help us understand erosion patterns which in turn may indicate possibly more fruitful areas for excavation in the future.
