First, baulks were trimmed in meters E186-188/S53-54, during which work approximately 50 tile fragments, 7 plaster fragments, and 9 small pieces of ceramic as well as 1 piece of bone were uncovered.*  A third cut was begun in meters E188/S53-54.  The decision was made to reverse the direction of the cut so as to remove the loci in the reverse order of their deposition.  The dark brown soil in these meters was designated Locus 3, abnd contained fewer rocks and roots than in Locus 1 or Locus 2.  In this work, approximately 110 tile fragments and 17 plaster fragments were found.  Also unearthed were 36 ceramic fragments, including one handle, one base and 3 rim fragments, all of which were impasto.  In addition, 6 bone fragments and one piece of slag (Find #1) were found.  The cut was extended into meters E187/S53-54, in which the brown soil had a looser consistency than in meters E188/S53-54, and was consequently designated Locus 4.  In this work, 18 tile fragments and 2 impasto handle

fragments were recovered.  The baulks in meters E187-188/S53-54 were then trimmed and depths were recorded at approximately 40 cm bd.

*included in this total was one pithos rim.
