At the start of the work day, we took progress depths in the four corners:
following this, we picked and sorted into buckets. The morning produced a cassetta of terracotta of all sized and a latte box of pottery, mostly small fragments. After the second pick pass, we noticed a change in soil color and texture. The soil became darker and chunkier. This is now locus 5. Locus 5 consists of medium brown, chunky soil with orange, yellow, red, and green soil inclusions. This contrasts the sandy, light brown soil of locus 4.

The afternoon began with the first pick pass in locus 5. By the end of the afternoon, an additional 1/2 pick pass was completed. Locus 5 yielded 1 cassetta of terracotta and one strawberry box of pottery. Very late in the afternoon we also recovered a badly corroded iron nail. Location was noted.
Locus 4 was closed today. It had consisted entirely of sandy, light brown soil with very little cultural material. In all, only about 1 1/2 cassetta of terracotta and circa 100 pieces of pottery
were taken from locus 4.
