A.M.

I/77 was brought from topsoil to 45 cm down in order to allow a section drawing (jogged if need be) from J/78-80.  A vessel without a base attachment was here.  Beside it, a ring base was found which may have broken off the vessel.  See finds #4 and 5.

D/77 was brought to 55 cm where large fragments of tiles were encountered and cleaned.  Work will concentrate here to reveal the extent of these tiles.

Work in K/79 in the tile/plaster layer produced a fine orangeware foot and a piece of bucchero incised with one line.  This latter piece was found on top of the foot, which was directly below a large pantile fragment.  Photographs were taken.

G-H/78-79 was cleaned to reveal the tile layer that exists here at this depth, 60-80 cm (due to uneven topsoil layer and backfill from T-23).  The tile fragments here are large and lie among rocks.  It seems that this is a continuation of

the situation in G-I/80-81 except at a lower level.  Tile was found on top of a stone pack there as well.

P.M.

G-H/78-79 continues to be cleaned with trowels.  Large stones and tile are present.

Tiles have also been found in D/77 and these were cleaned.  This area seems to have small fragments generally with only one large fragment uncovered so far.  This is at 55 cm.  A similar depth 4 meters away in I/77 has produced a gray sandy soil with a good deal of stones.  Some tile is found here.  Among the stones in this meter were pieces that approached slingstone shape - like those encountered at 45 cm in J/78 on June 26, p. 17 .  It seems likely that these are a natural occurrence because the stones come up in varying degrees of "likeness to slingstone-shape."  We keep those which look most slingstone-like, but disregard the rest.  It is probably the nature of this type of stone to erod into football-shaped pieces.

As we worked north, the soil in 77

change from the gray, sandy, stone-filled dirt of meter I into browner dirt similar to that at higher levels.  Our 55 cm cut moved as far as G/77.  One cassetta of tile was filled and 1/4 of a latte box of pottery.

K/78-79 was cleaned further with trowels and produced a cassetta of tile and a cassetta of plaster.  1/4 of a latte box of pottery was filled.  One large piece of bronze and several other flecks were found.  One fragment of a conical foot was found that may join the large fragment excavated this morning.
