A.M.
Initiated work with mestilinas in meters L(M)/64-65. Soil in this area, at a depth of 95-100 cm., is medium orangy brown with plaster and carbon inclusions. Running at a slight diagonal to the border line of meters L(M)/64-65 is a new, distinct line of tiles and pithos fragments. Pottery has been found only sporadically in the immediate vicinity of the tile lines with slightly heavier concentrations to the east at a distance of about 30-40 cm. The extension of the cut into the southern part of meter K/65 produced practically no pottery and only a few pieces of small tile.
After defining the northern dimensions of the K-L(M)/64-65 tile line, the squarish stone which bordered k/65 in meter k/64 was removed and the area beneath it was excavated partially. As this small area is removed, it will be recovered as K/64 (beneath square stone).
Approximately 1/2 a latte box of pottery was excavated from meter L(M)/64-65 while only 1/5 a cassette of tile was removed from K-L(M)/64-65, although most tile material was left in situ in order to
define and draw the tile/pithos line feature now seen in these meters. INterestingly, it is clear from the southern baulk of L(M)/64-65 that this line extends down into the level of the south east building floor.
Photographs were taken of this feature and the whole trench.

P.M.
Initiated cuts in meters K-L(M)/68 with mestilinas, bringing this area down to a depth of 95-100 cm. Soil in this area at this depth is the same as in K-L(M)/64-65, medium orangy brown with plaster and carbon inclusions. Tile is sporadic and pottery infrequent. Extension of cut into L(M)/66 has been producing more pottery (cir. 1/2 a latte with half meter finished) as well as fine ceramics.
The large stone situated beside the square flat stone in K/64 was also removed. The stone is unusually porous and friable. A small sample of this stone was broken off and taken to the magazino along with an unusual pan tile with a bulging center found nearby.
Further work in L(M)/66 has revealed a substantial concentration of orangeware pottery. This concentration seems to begin in roughly the same area as the tile line in K-L(M)/66, but about 15-20 cm. below this line. Interestingly, the concentration consists only of orangeware without any bucchero or impasto found yet.
Excavation of K-L(M)/68 produced little pottery but
exposed several small tile fragments.
The total amount of pottery excavations from L(M)/66-65 amounted to about a full latte while about 1/2 a cassette of tile and plaster was found.
