The area of CA92 is cleared to lay the trench. Foliage and small trees are removed and the surface raked clean. The trench is triangulated using the EW baseline located at 0.0 S. The following coordinates are established for the excavation of the trench:

NE: 20 E / 7 N

SE: 20 E / 4 N

SW: 17 E / 4 N

NW: 17 E / 7 N

The southern baulk is located 4 m north of the 0.0 S baseline, north of the path, and north of CA90 and 91.  After the trench is strung, it is clipped and raked for opening photos. A datum point is established in a tree immediately south of the trench at 29.58 m A.E. using the datum point of CA90. The trench is photographed and drawn for the opening of Locus 1.

Munsell color is 7.5 YR 3/2 Dark Brown. A pick pass is begun in the east. Soil is collected by hand into buckets and then dumped.

Excavation continues as in the morning. The topsoil is dark brown and compacted with small roots. The first full pick pass is completed. Handpicks are used to level the trench.
