Conclusion

CA95 was opened in 2023 for the following reasons:

1) To search for additional examples of non-elite habitation at Poggio Civitate.
2) To further explore the relationship between non-elite domestic space and industry at Poggio Civitate.
3)To broaden our understanding of the stratigraphic region affiliated with the Civitate A property zone.

CA95 was not successful in achieving the 1st or 2nd objectives, though the evidence for erosional action on the topsoil, near the bedrock, does help to confirm suspicions about the stratigraphic region of the Civitate A property zone.  

The materials recovered from CA95, consisting of only 9 sherds of mostly very abraded pottery, minimal quantities of similarly poorly preserved terracotta fragments, originated in a decontextualized layer of topsoil and so can reveal little about the use of the space occupied by CA95. The bedrock immediately beneath the topsoil Locus 1 of CA95 in the north half of the trench bore no indication of human use or manipulation of the natural rock formation. The lighter colored soil of Locus 2 (directly below the topsoil layer in the southern half of the trench) contained a paucity of artifacts, indicating a trend toward increasing sterility with depth. While we did not definitively rule out the existence of buried stratified deposits beneath Locus 2, there was no cause to suggest their existence, justifying our decision to close the trench.
