June 26, 2001
Excavation resumed again in this trench (263-261 S, 279-281 E). There was no work done in the morning as the trench was reopened in the afternoon session. Essentially this first day resuming excavation of the area was used to clean up the trench floor and the bulk wall down. The floor was leveled out first yielding about 1/3 latte box of terracotta and 8 pieces of pottery, all impasto. The bulk walls were then trimmed resulting in 1/16 latte box of terracotta and 1 piece of impasto pottery. There were no special finds for the day. A new locus was also mapped out spanning the entire trench floor ( 261-263 S, 279-281 E) with the following depths:
261 S 279 E 34 cm
261 S 281 E 29.5 cm
263 S 279 E 29 cm
263 S 281 E 31 cm
center 27 cm
*Note: depth measurements are below soil, not below datum
The new locus was designated locus 3, assuming that the earlier excavation had gone through 2 loci before. As no locus forms were filled out before today the earlier loci will be recovered near the bulk wall stratigraphy.
