Cleared the area of leaves and took opening elevations for the trench. Six pieces of worn terracotta were found in the leaves.
Opening Elevations
NW 22.38m NE 22.27m SW 22.03m SE 21.93m
Large stumps in various areas of the trench (especially in the western side of the trench) made laying out the lines somewhat difficult.
A datum point was established on a tree to the west of the trench. The dirt dump is located to the south east of the trench and the tile pile to the north west. Pottery will be counted by pieces while terracotta will be measured in casetta (bowls) with a volume of 2959.21 cubic centemeters.
PM
Took first pickpass through the northern half of the trench. The topsoil was a dark brown with many roots and rocks; some very work terracotta was mixed in with the soil. One find was a piece of vitrified material (Find 1). There is a large amount of white root rot in the NW area of the trench. Ending elevations were taken for the day.
Material Yielded
1 Casetta of Terracotta (Locus 1)
