Sector A-J 4-7 This area was cleared down to the level of what appears to be a paving or flooring consiting of small stones tightly packed together with a greyish-yellow clay. [see diagram
] Two heavily burnt layers appear in the profile of the western
flank. The lowest layer occurred just above the flooring in F-J 4-7 and contained large quantity of carbon, bucchero pottery and tiles. Above this layer a layer of light brown earth mixed with stone and a few terra cotta and pottery fragments. This layer was not found in sector E. This was followed by a rather irregular layer of greyish yellow clay running the entire length of the trench through A-J-5. Above this came the second burnt layer followed by light brown earth with stone and fewer terra cottas and pottery. The heaviest concentratrion of bucchero came from the burnt strata. The greatest number of tiles came in sector G-H, 4-7 at cepth c. 1.50m. On the eastern flank the upper burnt layer and the yellow-grey layer below it were not visible to the same extent as that on the western flank.
