A.M.
We began the morning with pick passes in all meters. We are still in the basically sterile locus 3. We have found about a dozen very fragmentary terracotta pieces. We also continued cleaning the baulk walls. We recovered a piece of bone, several pottery sherds, and about a latte box of terracotta.
By the late A.M. we had removed a total of 2/5 cassetta of terracotta and
two coarseware body fragments
three pieces of bone
P.M.
We began, as usual, with pick passes that revealed a locus change. We shovelled and sorted the remainder of locus 3, finding an increase in both pottery and terracotta. Once the material was removed, the trench was scraped down, as were the corners, and closing depths on locus 3 were taken:
closing depths for locus 3
Locus 3 consisted of gray, clayish soil that easily crumbled when shovelled and sorted. It was described as distrubed galestra or galestra-like soil. It was nearly devoil of material, porducing only approx one cassetta of terracotta and a few pieces of bulk pottery as described.
Locus 4 is darker and sandier than locus 3 and shows an immediate increase in artifactual evidence. At the end of the afternoon, 1/5 cassetta of terracotta had been found and the following pottery:
two pithos fragments
four coaseware sherds
two creamware fragments
one impasto rim
two bucchero fragments
one coarseware handle fragment
we ended the day by sweeping up the loose material from the trench floor and trimming back the baulk walls.
