92 93 Conclusion CB63 was opened to: CB 63 will be opened and explored for the following reasons: 1) To securely date the material discovered within the excavation area and associate it with either a new or pre-existing period of occupation at Poggio Civitate 2) To better understand the rectilinear stone formations discovered in 1991 and those materials recovered from the surrounding area of CB63 3) To understand the correlation between non-elite and elite habitations that occupied Poggio Civitate 4) To further expand upon our knowledge of non-elite and elite funerary practices through the differentiation between the materials discovered previously in other CB trenches and Poggio Aguzzo Regretfully, CB63 was unsuccessful in reaching its goals. There was no datable material to provide information pertaining to periods of occupation in the excavated area. CB63 was intentionally opened to aid in our understanding of test pits that had been excavated in surrounding regions. Despite the intentions to open a larger surface area than previous test pits, the surface area did not come across any material that would suggest the excavated area was populated by non-elite or elite peoples. Additionally, we failed to come across any additional rock features that contained material suggesting the 5X5 meter trench was used as an accessible burial ground to the surrounding populations. There was no comparable material to that discovered while excavating the 7th century elite burials at Poggio Aguzzo, nor was there any correlation with the non-elite huts and shed found in 2012-2013. Most material was recovered from Locus 1: Topsoil or Locus 2, areas in which Medieval pottery was discovered, suggesting that these were not secure layers. We reached galestra and bedrock at high elevations throughout the trench. In order to better explain the test pits and rectilinear formation initially discovered in 1991, further exploration outside the immediate vicinity is necessary as CB63 was not able to contribute towards our understanding of the burial practices of the surrounding elite and non-elite populations or their domestic space.
