Hot day.

I/1-2 : cut through wall

Eastern side of wall connected with red stripe was uncovered by shaving off clay stratum and burnt stratum to the east of it, in I/2, down to foundation stones of N-S LB wall ( for strata see p. 80 ).  Clay didn\'t contain anything, but in burnt soil (corresponding to (C) in area eastwards) were found some good bucchero pieces.

  • I/2
  • Stratum (B)
  • Base of umbilicated bucchero cup or low bowl; bean type?

These sherds were all found in burnt layer on top of lower wall.

The clayey burnt stratum continued right down to foundation stones of LB wall.

Level of clay seems to indicate that it is connected with stone wall in \'red area\'.

Area I-J/0-1

Went some 10 cm farther down in highly burnt stratum (B); more zin and dolia appeared ( ).  N-S section cut I-J/0-1 was continued downward.

Much carbon; in certain areas and pockets in great concentration; whole strawberry box filled from between zin 1 and 2 in I/1.

  • Find #10
  • I/0
  • 15 cm below "Upper Wall" surf.
  • Stratum (B)
  • Fragment of bucchero handle

During work in this area, two boxes of tiles were dumped and three cassette filled with pithoi fragments scattered over area, not clearly connected with the separate pithoi.

Area F-H/0-1

This area was opened today, its western limit being N-S wall of UB between R-5 and R-6, its eastern limit supposed N continuation of \'red area\'-wall.  A 50 cm wide strip was left out towards area I-J/0-1, for E-W section H-I.

Started by removing stone fill (A) which contained some few tiles (covering bottom of cassetta) and pottery pieces, including rim fragment of ziro.

Burnt soil (B) below seemed to be on a higher level westwards than eastwards.  In

H/0, next to UB wall was found.

  • H/0
  • Stratum (B)
  • Base fragment of umbilicated bucchero bowl

The aim of this cut (F-H/0-1) is primarily to pick up the eastward continuation of LB wall uncovered by I.E. in R-6; thus we would be able to define not only eastern but also northern limit of \'pithos unit.\'
