Daily Log

Friday, June 19, 1998

The morning started by measuring east-west elevation line running through the datum point and west side of CA42N, meter W13, in order to determine the downward slope of the trench and establish its relationship to the well in CA42.  The depth measurements were taken at 25 cm. intervals, starting at the datum point and running north through northwest corner of CA42N.  See drawing on p. .  Measurements were also taken along the east side of CA42N.  In general, both sides of the trench had approximately the same slope at the same elevations.

Photos and slides of both CA42 and CA42N were taken.

In CA42N the rest of the morning was spent further excavating locus 1.  Approximately a 5 cm. cut was made in N10, W11-13.  Bedrock was reached in meter N10 W13.  Two large stumps were removed in N10-13 W11-12.  Pottery and tile count will be done at the end of the day.

In CA42 we continued excavating locus 21 in N3-5 W1-1, using large picks and buckets to remove the dirt.  The trench is too deep to use shovels in placing excavated soil directly into wheelbarrow.  Baulks were trimmed continuously.  Several more stones were exposed in the wall of the well.  Galestra within 10-15cm. of the well wall is more moist.

June 19, 1998, PM

In CA42N the afternoon was spent completing approximately 5cm cut in meters N11-14 W11-13.  More bedrock was exposed in N11-13, W13.  trowels and small picks had to be used due to presence of bedrock and stumps in most parts of the trench, especially central and western meters.  A total of 72 tile pieces, 32 orange ware and 2 creamware fragments were uncovered today for CA42N, very worn.

In CA42 continued taking down locus 21.  Galestra became harder and more rocky, especially along the south side of the trench.  the final depths for tosday were 150-160cm b.d.

The elevation line measurements taken in the morning through the CA42N were extended east from the datum point running through CA42 and the well.  Again, measurements were taken every 25cm.  See drawing on p. .
