Trench Summary
CA41 was opened in order to investigate the discoveries of rectangular pakcings of small stones in CA36 from the 1991 and 1993 seasons. 6 x 8m trench was layed out but after 20 cm of top soil were excavated it was decided to concentrate on the area of the stone formation since magnetometry readings (p. 129) taken throughout the trench indicated a geological anomaly in the area of the stone formation. Soil stratigraphy shoed that a lense was evident immediately beneath the stone formation.
Distinct transition in soil suggests that the area was dug
intentionally which is also supported by the fact that all archaeological material was recovered from the olive brown soil constituting the lense.
Fragment of proto-corinthian pottery, a bucchero sherd with incised rope and diamond patterns, as well as numerous coil-made pottery fragments, indicate that the time frame for the area of the stone formation is earlier than that associated with Piano del Tesoro area to the east.
Heavy carbon concentration within the lense indicates a burn.
