Area B 4-5

Took these grids down further into B level.

Profile B-E 3 was pulled down.

The trench was closed down for this year.

B 4-5

B stratum:

Some red burnt soil still remained to be dug in grid 4.

Below this soiltype, mainly in grid 4, in the area next to N-S profile in 3, comes a gray layer with carbon specks.  Where this stratum is seen to slope down n-wards.  For this gray, cf. grid C4, p. 137 .

Eastwards at same level as ray layer in B4,we have, mainly in B5, a stratum of

middle-small size pietre: cf. p. 116 .

Some pieces of tiles among the stones and some pottery.  The soil here is brown, fine-grained.

In B 4-5, we won\'t go down further at this point; we leave the stones.

The strata in area B-H (3)4-5(6) are still far from clear, but better to proceed slowly here, step by step, and leave some (i.e. much) for later.

Profile B-E 3

The profile which has been drawn before was pulled down from the S stratum by stratum, with the help of the drawing.  In B-D 3, the profile is still standing in its original height, in E it has been already taken down into B stratum, heavily burnt soil pietrische.

First of all, A stratum is removed, speedily, in B-D.

Then in E and D, we work down in B level which is here characterized by heavily burnt soil with a concentration of pietrische (with notably pointed edges).

Then stratum B mainly in B and C 3 was shaved off.

Below this appears the gray surface of B stratum: gray, with carbon specks.  The level of this surface in the profile was measured from the fix point.

When pulling down the profile, the big stone mentioned several times before, visible since last year in D3, seemingly N-most stone in Big Stone Line, was made to appear; it has huge dimensions ca. 82x60x40, and is of a regular shape with a flat upper surface.

A smaller stone on top of this was removed, after drawing and measuring:

The Big Stone Line is now disclosed in its full length, N-S.

Still no clear continuation eastwards, either at N or at S end.

R5 area dug this year was cleaned for pictures to be taken.

The pit C-D 4-5 should be filled up with some material.

Some pichetti should be driven far down into the soil, to make measuring easier next year (?)
