Over the five years of excavation in T90, exceptionally high quantities of vitrified terracotta have been recovered; in the four years of excavation from 2017 to 2022, T90 yielded 2.664 kg of vitrified terracotta. The vast majority of this vitrified terracotta originated in deposits underlying and predating the construction of EPOC4. In 2023, we did not excavate any deposits underlying EPOC4’s floor surface, and so recovered far smaller quantities of vitrified terracotta. In 2023, T90 yielded a total of 69 fragments of vitrified terracotta, weighing 220 grams.

By far the largest concentration of vitrified terracotta was recovered from Locus 45, a deposit associated with the abandonment and destruction of EPOC4. In this deposit, we recovered 61 fragments of vitrified terracotta, weighing 204 grams and amounting to 93% of all vitrified terracotta recovered by weight. Strangely, an equivalent deposit, Locus 52, produced only one fragment of vitrified terracotta, weighing less than a gram. The discrepancy between these two loci is puzzling and may have to do with their positioning withing the trench. Locus 52 was situated to the north and at a higher elevation than Locus 45; as both deposits are associated with the abandonment and destruction of EPOC4, materials like vitrified terracotta may have eroded downhill, thus explaining the relatively high quantities of vitrified terracotta found in Locus 45 and the relative dearth found in Locus 52.

No other deposits produced significant quantities of vitrified terracotta; just a scattering of vitrified terracotta was found in all other loci.
