Daily Log

June 27, 2002

An extension was made to the north of Locus 14 . This extension incorporates meters 75S/197E, 75S/198E, 76S/197E, and 76S/198E. This area was defined as loci 16 and 17 and opening elevations were taken. Locus 16 is characteristically loose and represents soil and terracotta dump soil possibly from trench T26. Locus 17 is the actual topsoil level of the extension which is characteristically dark brown soil with heavy organic material. The loci were drawn and then a cut was made in the northwest corner of locus 16. This soil was removed with a pick pass and then using the shovel-wheelbarrel technique. No terracotta or plaster was saved from this cut since it appears to have been dump soil.

A possible statue fragment was discovered on the surface within meters 75-76S/196-197E. An elevation was taken for the piece but it appears to have been resting on a rock/soil dump.

In Locus 9 , two complete pick passes were taken throughout the locus. Locus 8 was sheered back with two pick passes revealing several more rocks below those encountered before believed to be associated with the feature. Measurements were taken for 15 rocks which most likely belong to the rock feature. This feature will be drawn using these measurements and will be included on a later page. One larger rock was removed from locus 9 which may have fallen from the feature. This was done because the stone became loose during a pick pass. In addition, a greyish soil was encountered in the northeast meter of locus 9 (meter 81S/197E). This soil contains carbon and will be defined on the next day. Locus 8 produced 2 pottery fragments and 1/4 latte box of terracotta. Locus 9 produced 21 fragments of pottery and 1/2 cassette of terracotta and plaster.
