A.M.

Began excavation of a small (circa 25 cm wide) shelf of unexcavated soil in meters K/67-68.  This shelf, which stretched the length of hte 2 meters was approximately 75 below surface level along the northern baulk.  When removed, the entire floor of meters K-L(M)/67-68 was consistantly 85-90 cm below surface level.  Soil throughout the shelf was dark brown with some amounts of charcoal and fragmentary plaster.  About 1-10 a cassette of tile was removed, but severl larger tile fragments were left in situ.  1 full late of pottery was found.  Finds from the excavation of this area include: a fragment of relatively high fire painted grey pottery (#1), a stem and part of hte tondo of an orangeware chalice #2, and a partial rocchetto #3.

Also removed the top 5 cm of soil from meter L(M)/66, making this meter about 75 cm. below surface level.  Approximately 1 cm of the top of this cut was medium brown soil with little material while the bottom 4 cm combined heavy concentrations of

plaster and carbon.  Small flakes of bronze were also found in this area.  About an 1/8 of a latte boc of pottery was removed in this cut along with about 1/20 of a cassette of tile.

Completed 5 cm cut over meters K-L(M)/65-66.  Entire 4 meter area currently at 65-70 cm below surface level.  Soil is consistantly dark brown with heavy concentrations of carbon and plaster.  1 full latte box of pottery was found in this cut along with approximately 1/2 a cassette of tile fragments, most of which were small and worn.  25-30 small flakes of bronze were also excavated in this cut.

Finds from this cut include: two joining fragments of incised bucchero from meter K/64 (#4), a piece of oddly shaped terracotta which may possibly be a piece of a lateral sima (#5) from K/66, a fragment of worked bone from K/66 (#6), an unusual piece of high fire brownish ceramic (#7) from meter L(M)/66, and a fragment of a bronze tack from L(M)/65.
