Stratigraphy Summary
Final Trench Plan CD8 drawing
North Baulk CD8 and West Baulk CD8 drawing
The stratigraphy, as a whole, in CD8 sloped towards the southeast. The southeast corner of the trench being 54 cm lower than the northwest.
An approximately 10cm layer of topsoil, with thick roots and tree stumps in places, was excavated throughout the trench.
Below the topsoil a layer of light brown soil was unearthed. This stratum was found throughout the trench, but at varying thicknesses. In the northwest corner, meters A/1-3, it was only 10-20cm thick due to the uprising of bedrock. Elsewhere, towards the middle of the trench, B/2-4, it was approximately 40cm thick. In meter A/4 a light gray, and below that an olive soil, was found. These seem, based on material recovery, to be the same stratum as the light brown soil, but were likely discolored by the tree which stood in this area.
In meters B-C/1-3, a thin stratum, 10-20cm, of dark brown soil with carbon was encountered. This soil seemed to follow a downward slope to the east and south, ending in a "pit-like" feature in meter C/3 (see p. 98)
Beneath both the light brown and dark down strata galestra and bedrock were encountered.
