Introduction

Introduction

Civitate A is best described as the area to the north of the main road leading to Piano del Tesoro, which makes up a large portion of the north slope of the hill.  While excavation had taken place here previously, it was the discovery of roasting pits and a number of pieces of copper slag found in CA 33 during the 1990 season which renewed intrest in the area (see JB I and JB III ).  Following this discovery, in 1991, a number of trenches were excavated in the Civitate A area.  CA 37 contained what appeared to be an intentional deposit containing full profiles of both coarseware and impasto vessels (See TT I ).  CA 36, begun during the 1991 season and then continued in the 1993 season, revealed an intentional deposit which contained full profiles of coil made pottery and a bronze finbula and was capped by an intentional deposit of stones.  The material from this trench, the fibula in particular, suggests an earlier date for the deposit than that associated with Piano del Tesoro to the east (see JB IV and TT IV ).  Furthermore, during excavation on Civitate A during the 1997 season an archaic period well was discovered (see JBB II , LS I , and MG II ).  During excavation of the area surrounding the well in 1998 another intentional deposit with a diamond shaped stone capping was discovered in CA 42N (see MG II ).

Each of these previous excavations contribute to make further exploration of the Civitate A area a necessity.

CA 55 will be established in the area of CA 36 and and will connect to that trench along CA 36's northern and eastern walls.  The reason for this is that it appears that the deposited soil from CA 36 extended to the north further than the extent of the trench (see TT IV p. 53 ). Thus, the goals for CA 55 during the 2007 season are as follows:

1. To gain a better understanding of the deposit in CA 36 and the stratigraphy associted with it.

2. To explore the possibility of further intentional deposits in the area.

3. To explore the possibility of habitation in the area related to the deposits in CA 36 and CA 42N.

4. To explore the possiblility of further metal working in the area associated with the roasting pits in CA 33.

Material will be collected and separated for each locus.  Any special finds will have their coordinates and elevation taken

Terracotta will be measured in bowls which have an approximate diameter of 31 cm and an approximate depth of 8.5 cm.

Pottery and bone will be measured in boxes with the approximate dimesions 23x9x6 cm.

*Coordinates, methodology, and absolute elevations for CA 55 will be established in later sections.
