The last of the top layer of tiole fall in F-H 91-95 was lifted. Pieces were set aside to be examined for joins. One box of pottery and bone was found. (See also finds 2 + 3)

Clearing around the next "layer" of tiles was begun in preparation for their lifting. The soil here continued to be brown and crumbly with plaster and burn pockets. Fewer apparent complete widths or lengths can be seen, althoughe these pieces may well complete tiles which have already been excavated in part.

The small tile fall running along the east end of the Southeast Building (see pp. 193-195 , 201 ) was excavated in part, to attempt to determine its extent. Several more pan tiles and few pieces of cover tile were revealed, yielding enough tile to indicated that this fall is oriented at roughly 90 degrees from the northeast

end of the main tile fall currently being lifted. Several things are of interest in this tile fall first, one pan tile fragment appears to extend below the edge of a very large rock in H/I 95, indicating that that rock- briefly considered as a possible column base, but such idea rejected for several reasons (no floor nearby, no clear evidence of enough disturbance to topple column base onto its side, apparent difference in level between it and other bases) -fall from some other position after the collapse that dumped these tiles; and second, the soil around these tiles is dense, clayey, reddish (almost purple, in places) and shows much indication of burning (color and consistency are very different from those found in main tile fall).

Meters K-L 97-98 were swept and photographed before the rocks were removed. The tiles first noted Monday afternoon and expanded upon on Tuesday would seem to be in line with the east tile fall, and were left in place. They extend into the balk, and since there is a narrow band of unexcavated earth along the west side of this area, an extension to the west seems called for. of note: soil around these tiles is brownish yellow, showing no signs of burn.

P.M.

The tile fall along the East end of the Southeast Building was traced north and slightly west toward the main tile fall. While tile is common in the southern portion of the trench (meters I-J 95/96), oddly enough not tiles were encountered in this northern section (H95) Small amounts of pottery and bone, most showing no signs of burning, were recovered. The soil continued to be of a dark red clay-like type.

The clearing of the lower level of the main tile fall in F-H 92-95 was completed in preparation for photography and lifting tomorrow. 2/3 of a box of pottery was saved. many pieces of storage pottery were recovered, which may well join with pieces

previously excavated. In addition, a handle in place on a molded storage jar fragment was uncovered and left in place in H92. It appears to be similar to the one in H95 previously uncovered and left in place. Two small pieces of bucchero (finds 4 & 5) were also found.

Meters K-L 97-98 were cleared to floor level below level of removed rocks. Any tiles enountered were left in place to see if there is indeed a tile fall along this flank. Backfill in KL 96 began to be removed in preparation for the excavation of the small wedge of unexcavated earth over the above-mentioned tiles. There was no pottery, less than one half cassetta loose tile.
