In previous years, moderate to large amounts of vitrified terracotta have been recovered. In the 2023 season, a small amount of vitrified terracotta was recovered from T26.
The majority of the vitrified terracotta fragments were recovered from Locus 25, which produced 26 fragments making up 32.50% of the total. Notably, Locus 25 is equivalent to Locus 14, which yielded 2022’s second highest amount of vitrified terracotta. These Loci both are made up of materials from a tile fall associated with the destruction of the OC2/Workshop roof.
Locus 24 produced the next highest concentration of vitrified terracotta with 19 fragments recovered and containing 23.75% of vitrified terracotta finds. Notably, two vitrified tiles were recovered from Locus 24 (PC20230102, PC20230103).
Locus 33 also contained a high percentage of the T26’s 2023 vitrified terracotta, with 17 pieces being recovered at 21.25% of the trenches vitrified terracotta. Notably, this locus also contains a tile fall, which, while not related with Loci 24 or 25, also contains a tile fall.
Notable is the recovery of the vitrified rim with adhered ceramic (PC20230002) and a vitrified handle fragment (PC20230005) from Locus 23. Locus 23 is equivalent to Locus 1 excavated in 2022, a top layer which yielded a large amount of the vitrified terracotta from T26.
Locus 30 had 12 fragments, or 15.00% of all vitrified terracotta found. The locus is a large carbon deposit within a highly compacted, medium brown clay wherein the vitrified terracotta fragments were found beneath and around the carbon deposit.
The high amount of vitrified terracotta located in T26 is unsurprising given the destruction of the OC2/Workshop.
