A.M.

The morning began with two deep picks passes throughout the trench.  After sorting, the trench was levelled to determine whether a new locus was being approached.  After consulting with Dr. Tony Tuck, it was concluded that the trench should be nearing completion.  The trench was sectioned at 74 S and the northern half was closed.  The southern half will continue to be picked and sorted in the hopes of reaching  the ancient slope level sooner.  A goal of the end of the day was set for completion of the trench.  Elevations at this time are:

Grid Point       Elevation

72 S 222 E     142 cm BD     22.47m ae

72 S 224 E     155 cm BD     22.34m ae

74 S 222 E     159 cm BD     22.3m ae

74 S 224 E     169 cm BD     22.2m ae

76 S 222 E     162 cm BD     22.27m ae

76 S 224 E     184 cm BD     22.05m ae

A deep pick pass was executed in the Southern, active half of the trench (bounded by the points 74-76 S, 222-224 E).

P.M.

After 3 afternoon pick passes, the first patch of very light colored soil was encountered.  The trench was picked again to further reveal this soil.  After two more passes, the galestra had appeared only in very small pockets.  Picking continued, as deeply as possible.  A possible statue fragment was discovered ( Find #1 ).

Despite extra time spent working by Zak, Mike D., and Molly, galestra was not reached throughout the trench. Locus 6 was declared in the southern half and Locus 5 was closed.  Opening elevations for Locus 6 , which is characterized by light to medium brown soil with small pockets

of galestra, were:

Grid Point     Elevation

74 S 222 E   180 cm BD     22.09m ae

74 S 224 E   189 cm BD     22m ae

76 S 222 E   175 cm BD     22.14m ae

76 S 224 E   187 cm BD     22.02m ae

Locus 5 was closed, having yielded 2 and 1/2 bowls of terra cotta and 28 sherds of pottery today -- including 1 handle, 3 rims, and 2 bases.
