Daily Log for 25 July 2007

AM

Work began by continuing to define the bedrock feature across the entire trench. Dirt was removed using trowels and baulk hammers. In the center of the trench, the few centimeters of soil directly above the bedrock are claylike and yellowish. In the east, there is a high concentration of bone in the soil, including 2 pieces with possible cut marks. Small pieces of worn terracotta continue to be recovered in the soil, especially near the eastern baulk wall. For the most part, no new soil distinctions have been noted. The soil across the trench remains olive brown and is very hard-packed in between the rocks. Seven special finds were made this morning:

Small fragments of non-diagnostic pottery and small, worn terracotta fragments were recovered inside the depression. Small, carbonized seeds began to be recovered across the pit.

Locus 2

Approximately 1.21m below datum

Approximately 13.54N/11.47E

Carbonized seeds (grape seeds?)

Find #9

Locus 2

Approximately 1.33m below datum

Approximately 13.55N/11.56E

Burned impasto rim fragments (2)

Tomorrow the area of the pit will be declared its own locus, locus 3. Today 8 pieces of terracotta, 3 pieces of pottery, and 3 pieces of bone were recovered from the pit. Across the rest of the trench, 2/3 bowl of terracotta and ¾ latte box of pottery and bone, mostly bone, were recovered today.
