Locus Summary

Locus Summary

Locus 1 was the first topsoil cut. It consisted of a humus layer, 5 yr 2.5/2 a dark reddish brown and a soil layer below this that is a dark grayish brown, 10yr 4/2. Locus 1 covered the entire trench area N1-6, W11-16, in CA42. (0 cm opening depth surface- 15-21 cm b.d.)

Locus 2 was the road bed that existed in

meters N3-1W16, N2-1W15-14. It was a grayish brown color, 2.5 yr 5/2, and consisted of densely packed stones, small in size, approximately 3-5 cm in width (11-22 cm b.d.).

Locus 3 covered the area in meters N3-6, W11-13. It consisted of soil that was light olive brown, 2.5 y 5/3, and had a clayish consistency. This soil appeared after a 10-15 cm cut. Soil similar to topsoil existed directly above it. 10yr 4/2 (15-21 cm opening depth; 23-29 cm closing bd.)

Locus 4 covered meters N3, W13-12, N4W12. It consisted of a light olive brown soil, 2.5y 5/3. (The opening depth was 23-29 cm bd. and the closing was 23-35 cm bd.)

Locus 5 was meter N4W13. The soil color is a dark grayish brown, 10yr 4/2. (Equates with locus 1, 3, the top 10 cm). This locus is

representative of an anomaly. There was a high concentration of tile fragments and pottery sherds. The opening depth was 18 cm bd., the closing was 20 cm bd.

Locus 6 in N4W13. This locus lies directly below locus 5. The soil color in locus 6 is alight olive brown, 2.5y 5/3. (Equates with locus 4). The soil is very clayish and moist. The opening depth is 20 cm bd. The closing is 33 cm bd.

Locus 7 covers meters N4W14, and half of N3W14. It consists of a dark grayish brown soil 10yr 4/2. (Equates with loci 1,3, 5) the opening depth is at 9-18 cm bd. and the closing is at 20-25 cm bd.

Locus 8 covers meters N4W14, and half of N3

W14. It consists of a light olive brown soil, 2.5 y 5/3. (Equates with loci 4,6) The opening depth is at 20-25 cm bd. and the closing at 27-36 cm bd.

Locus 9 covers the southern half of meter N3W14. This locus has a dark grayish brown soil, 10yr 4/2. (Equates with loci 1,3,5,7) The opening depths were not recorded, the closing were at 19-22 cm bd.

Locus 10 covers the southern half of meter N3W14. It consists of a light olive brown soil, 2.5y 5/3. (Equates with loci 4,6,8). The opening depths were at 19-22 cm bd. and the closing at 39-40 cm bd. At the bottom of this locus the soil became very gritty and loose, shale-like. This is most likely pre-galestra.

Locus 11 includes the area made after a 20 cm cut was taken in the west baulk of meters N3-4W15 (loci 8 and 10). The soil was a dark grayish brown, 10yr 4/2. (Equates with loci 1,3,5,7,9). The opening depths were at 8-16cm bd. and the closing were at 20-15 cm bd.

Locus 12 (same area as locus 11 but at a different level). A 20 cm cut in the west baulk of meters N3-4W15. It consisted of a light olive brown soil, 2.5y 5/3. (Equates with loci 4,6,8,10). The opening depths were at 15-20 cm bd. and the closing were at 32-36 cm bd. Some flecks of carbon were present.

Locus 13 covers the southern half of meters N5W13-14. It consisted of a dark grayish brown soil, 10yr 4/2. (Equates with loci 1,3,5,7,9,11).

The opening depths were at 12-19 cm bd. and the closing at 15-27 cm bd.

Locus 14 covers the same area as locus 13, the southern half of meters N5W13-14. The soil was a light olive brown, 2.5 y 5/3. (Equates with loci 4,6,8,10, 12). The soil has a clayish consistency. The soil in meter N5W13 was very dense and could only be taken down about 5 cm because of a high concentration of small rocks below the surface. In meter N5W14 the cut was taken down to 226-28 cm bd. (The opening depths were at 20-27 cm bd.; the closing at 53-57 cm bd.).

Locus 15 covers meters N3-4W13-14. The soil is a light olive brown color, 2.5y 5/3. (Equates with loci 4,6,8,10,12, 14) with a clayish consistency. There is a high concentration of carbon, pottery and tile.* (in 2.5y 4/2 soil only noted on next page.) The opening depth was at

30-32 cm bd. and the closing at 57-62 cm bd. This light olive brown soil existed outside and around the concentration of rocks in meter N4W13. Galestra soil became present at the closing depths in locus 15. The soil within the concentration of rocks is a dark grayish brown, 2.5y 4/2. There is carbon present in this soil.

Locus 16 is t he feature in meter N4W13. The soil is a dark grayish brown 2.5y 4/2. (Equates with bottom layers of locus 15). There are small pockets of yellow and gray colored clay. There are a lot of rocks. The further down into the feature, the more moist and clay-like the soil became. The opening depth was at 56 cm bd. and the closing at 112 cm bd.

Locus 17 covered meters N1-5W18. This locus was comprised of a humus layer, 10yr 3/2,

a very dark grayish brown, directly below this a dark grayish brown soil 10yr 4/2. (Equates with loci 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, and 13). There was a concentration of small stones, similar to those found in locus 2, but it was less dense here and easily picked through. The soil is very loose in the topsoil cut. The opening depths were at +3-16 cm bd. and the closing at 8-24 cm bd.

Locus 18 covered meters N1-5W18. The soil was a light olive brown. (Equates with loci 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14). The soil at the closing depths 23-52 cm bd. consisted of galestra. (The opening depths were at 8-24 cm bd.)

Locus 19 covers the meters N3-5W15, only half of N5W15. Contains topsoil layer in the top of anomaly, so the soil consists of a dark grayish brown 10yr 4/2 (the anomaly and

the surrounding soil, a light olive brown, 2.5 y 5/3 (Equating with loci 4,6,8,10, 12, 14, 16, 18). In the dark grayish brown soil, above and within the anomaly, there is a concentration of pottery and tile fragments as well as carbon flecks. The opening depths were at 9-19 cm bd. and the closing at 20-24 cm bd.

Locus 20 is the anomaly. It consisted of a dark grayish brown soil, 10yr 4/2 in meters N3-4W15. There was a high concentration of pottery and tile fragments and plaster. The opening depth was at 23 cm bd. and the closing at 46 cm bd.

*Loci 5, 6, and 15 can all be associated with the well. Coarseware fragments that seem to be of the same vessel, a possible cover or cap to the well, came from all these loci. See p. 88 loci plan and p. 161-163 for the coarseware fragments of the well cover.
