WEDNESDAY, JULY 15

AM

First, the two stones were cut under with trowels and removed.  The cut was continued, meters E188/S53-54, bringing the entire area, meters E186-188/S53-54 to an approximate depth of 65 cm bd.  The area maintained the locus designation of Locus 5.  During picking 2 finds were recovered from meters E188/S53, (Find #1) one a small spindle whorl measuring approximately 1.5 cm in diameter and a piece of reed-impressed plaster (Find #2) (see afternoon entry - p.45).

The baulks were trimmed and roughly 25 pieces of terracotta were found.  7 bone fragments, 3 coarseware fragments, 2 orangeware fragments and 14 impasto fragments were found.

NOTE :

On this day, Michele Kunitz took over excavation of ME 186-188/S53-54

P.M.

A new cut was begun along western 2 meters of the trench stretching 1.5 meters east.  The cut was about 10 cm deep.  A new soil was discovered and the are of this new cut was designated as Locus 8.  The soil was a little bit lighter than the previous soil.  In addition, there were noticably fewer terracotta fragments in this soil, only 20 found in the 3 meter cut.  During picking an impasto rim and many related body sherds were discovered in meter E187/S53.  In addition to that pottery, 12 pieces of bone, 2 pieces of coarseware, and 1 creamware fragment were recovered.
