Pick pass done in the second meter from the north. The soil remains consistent with Locus 2 , but is slightly damp due to rain overnight. Soil sorted and cleaned from the trench. Small concentrations of terra cotta and pottery found during cleaning. One bucked sifted and four fragments of terra cotta and one fragment of pottery found, each less than a centimeter at its longest dimension. Pick pass commenced in the western half of the southernmost meter. During cleaning, one fragment of slag recovered.

Locus 2

Another bucket was sifted and no artifacts were recovered.

A pick pass was completed in the eastern half of the southernmost meter. During cleaning small concentrations of pottery and terra cotta found. One stump was removed from along the western wall. Another pick pass executed in the second meter from the north especially around the stumps.

Soil remains consistent with Locus 2 , sorted and cleaned from the trench. Pottery and terra cotta found in small concentrations. One bucket sifted and a one centimeter fragment of terra cotta recovered. A second bucket was sifted and two fragments of terra cotta about half a centimeter in length recovered. A third bucket was sifted and no material was found. Hand picks and trowels used to clear soil and small rocks from all stumps' root systems. Very small concentrations of material, predominately terra cotta, removed. Many seven to ten centimeter length sized rocks removed from beneath the stumps. Several roots removed from the largest stump. While clearing the soil from beneath the removed roots, a bronze leech fibula fragment was uncovered.

Locus 2

20130010

A shallow pick pass done in the western half of the northernmost meter, avoiding the large rocks. A large fragment of pithos is emerging from the soil along with several medium sized twenty to fifty centimeters in length uncovered, so from now on

the big pick will not be used in this area. A shallow pick pass also done in the eastern half of the northernmost meter. In both cases soil remains consistent with Locus 2 soil. As in the northernmost meter, there are a few medium sized rocks emerging below the cleaned soil. Small concentrations of terra cotta, pottery, and bone found during sorting, as well as another fragment of slag.

Locus 2

Because of the frequent find quantity of slag it will be collected in bulk from this point on.

Pick pass done in the southernmost meter of the trench. Soil remains consistent with Locus 2 , sorted and cleaned from the trench. Terra cotta and pottery found during cleaning. One bucket sifted and a fragment of burnt bone recovered. A second bucket sifted and nothing recovered. A second pick pass completed in the southern meter. Small amounts of terra cotta discovered, as

well as a fragment of slag collected as a bulk find. Pick pass done once more in the southern meter, especially around the tree stumps. Soil remains consistent with Locus 2 , sorted and cleaned from the trench. Small concentrations of terra cotta found during cleaning. Also, one fragment of vitrified terra cotta found.

Locus 2

One bucket sifted and one one centimeter fragment of pottery found. In order to better see the extent and nature of the medium to large rocks included within the northern two meters, it was decided to extend CA 72 eastward two meters. The extension was triangulated off of the 66E line between 36 and 39S. CA 82, CA 78, CA 73, and CA 76 were likewise extended to open up the area of investigation even further. Work was ended for the day by clearing plant debris and loose rocks from the surface of the CA 72 extension.
