Work continued on cuts 3 and 4. In grids J-N/50-52, the trench was taken down another 40 cm below the level of the foundation walls. In L-M/50-52, much "bright red" earth was encountered: very dry and friable - perhaps a pavement level for the room.
Below the red earth is dark brown soil, wet and much heavier. Finds in the bright red earth were almost non-existant. Further to the south, in J-K/50-52 is a dark red stratum superimposed on the same dense dark brown (is this the dark brown II of cut 2?); the dark red does contain some pottery and tile.
