Daily Log

July 23, 2001

Work began today exposing and cleaning down the bedrock discovered in locus 25 the last day of work, so we exposed more and more of it.  It started to look like there was no return wall running perpendicular as we had hoped.  Also, there were not any rocks around it, either.

There was, however, an immense (relatively) amount of pottery and bone that was being pulled up with several ridged pieces.  There were also occasional small pockets of charcoal coming up as well.  Material recovered from locus 25 for the day was:

  • Terracotta: 1 1/3 latte box
  • Pottery: 110 pieces, 5 creamware, 8 coarseware, 8 orange impasto, 5 buccheroid, 84 impasto

Not having found a perpendicular return wall, we decided to look for a wall that might run parallel to the "wall" we may have.  We opened up an extension, locus 26, at 278-250 S by 267-269 E.

Opening depths of locus 26 were:

  • 278 S 269 E: 53 cm b.d.
  • 278 S 267 E: 49 cm b.d.
  • 280 S 269 E: 54 cm b.d.
  • 280 S 267 E: 54 cm b.d.
  • Center: 58 cm b.d.

Locus 26 has dark brown topsoil with heavy organic content and root systems.  Pick passes were put in, but as of yet, no rocks are visible.  Material recovered from locus 26 for the day:

  • Terracotta: 1 1/2 latte box
  • Pottery: 5 pieces, 1 creamware, 2 orange impasto, 2 impasto

Closing depths for the day for locus 26:

  • 278 S 267 E: 65.5 cm b.d.
  • 278 S 269 E: 64.9 cm b.d.
  • 280 S 267 E: 62.6 cm b.d.
  • 280 S 269 E: 66.8 cm b.d.
  • Center: 66.9 cm b.d.
