The topsoil cut in L-H/86-93 was completed.

In 86-89/H the balk borders on backfilled T-23 trenches to the north. The cut floor ranged in depth from about 5 cm below surface to close to 40 cm depending on the slope itself, the dump and the backfilled T-23. In general to the east and western meters, as mentioned before, the soil was deep brown and rooty with small stones. Small amounts of worn tile, plaster and various ceramics were found in this soil. In 91-88/K-H a hilled-up old plaster (with some terracotta and a little ceramic) lump extended. Today in finishing the topsoil cut two cassette of mixed tile and plaster were removed (60%, 40% respectively). Two (3) latte boxes of pottery including everything from bucchero to heavy pottery were removed. A few fragments of pithos were retained on site.

Second cuts were begun in LK/86-87 and in HI/92-93 to a depth of 40 cm. and 35 cm. respectively, below the surface. To the west in LK/86-87 the soil was grey-brown and quite dry with lots of roots and some small rocks. Large amounts of pottery came from about a one-half meter cut between L and K. About latte boxes recovered including heavy poyyery , lots of impasto and bucchero and other mixed wares. About ¼ cassetta of pithos came from here, a couple of fragments of which showed evidence of burning and blackening. About cassetta of tile and cassetta of plaster was found, very little of which showed burning. All through this soil was carbon and black material through it didn't at all

present the appearance of a heavily burned area. Below this cut seemed to lie heavier concentrations of tile and plaster as can be seen in the balk. Note that a heavy bronze tack with an iron attachment was found. See find #1 p. 23 same thing found in balk t this meter. In the eastern end beginning of the cut at I/92-93 the soil continued to be the same rocky grey-brown soil which seemed to appear in the upper "topsoil" cut. More material was recovered, however. About ½ cassetta of mostly tile and a little plaster was recovered. Almost none showed blackeneing or burning. Occasionally bits of carbon appeared in the soil. About 1 latte box of mixed ceramics was recovered and included a fine greyware rim of which pieces were found in 1986, a fine orangeware base and bucchero. Some heavy pottery and a few pithos fragments were also found.

A very few fragments of bone were found in both areas.
