Took opening elevations after work on Sunday

  • A (NW corner): 196 cm b.d. (27.02 m AE)
  • B (NE corner): 195 cm b.d. (27.03 m AE)
  • C (Center): 197.5 cm b.d. (27.05 m AE)
  • D (SW corner): 190 cm b.d. (27.08 m AE)
  • E (SE corner): 190 cm b.d. (27.08 m AE)

Began with a pick pass in the southern half of the trench, the nmoved northward.  Soil is still mottled, with bits of carbon, plaster, and decomposing terracotta interspersed throughout.  Near the center of the trench, the soil is distinctively more orange.  Shoveling and sorting into the wheelbarrow uncovered a sherd of a possibly painted rim ( ).

Another pick pass was initiated over the nothern meters.  Shovelling and sorting continued into the wheelbarrow until a sherd of possible cut-out bucchero was uncovered during the sorting ( ), at whic point the remaining meters were sifted with trowels and then shovelled.  Also found were two pieces of bronze ( and ), a possible piece of slag ( ), and a small sherd of painted pottery ( ).

Though there has been no visible shift in the soil composition, the material now being pulled up appears to be of possible orientalizing origin rather than archaic.  Bucchero is now being sorted separately in hopes of finding joins.

Began by picking the southwest corner.  Sorting turned up what appeard to be a fragment of a plaster loom weight ( ), another entire loom weight ( ), and a sherd of an impasto rim with bronze embedded in it ( ).

Made a quarter pick pass in the southeast corner.  The soil remains consistent with earlier, extremely mottled soil with orange coloring near the center of the trench.  Found what appears to be a portion of a bucchero strut with cut-outs ( ) and another piece of painted pottery ( ).
