A.M.
We began with a pick pass in all meters, sifting and finding very little cultural material. We continued after bread with a second pick pass.
The soil continues to be mottled with very small bits of terracotta and clay, a lot of pink and white plaster, and a lot of carbon inclusions. This soil represents the scraped surface between the orientalizing burn layer and the archaic functional layer which is the light brown sandy soil we have called locus 4. Following T30, we expect to come upon the burn layer within the next half meter or so.
Since we are recovering so little cultural material, we decided to resume shovelling and sorting over the wheelbarrow. Doing this we found several pieces of bulk bronze.
In the late A.M. we found two large statue fragments (hand sized) in a pile of soil that had been trowelled together
on the trench floor. We continued to sort through this soil, looking for additional pieces to match the fresh break on the recovered fragment.
P.M.
In the afternoon, we began by sifting the remaining locus 5 material from the floor, searching for statue fragments. Several loose, small pieces were collected before the remainder of the sherd was found in situ on the trench floor. Location was noted and pictures were taken. Following this, the pieces were removed for reconstruction down the hill. We finished cleaning up the floor and spent the rest of the afternoon trimming baulk walls.
Today in Locus 5 we recovered approx 3/4 cassetta of terracotta and plaster and 1/3 latte of bone and pottery. We also recovered 10 pieces of bulk bronze.
