Introduction

The 2014 season will explore an area immediately to the east of trenches excavated during the 2012 and 2013 seasons in Civitate A. The part of Poggio Civitate that is to be investigated is designated as Pian del Tesoro. During the 2012 season, two test trenches, CA 70 and 71 , were excavated to the north of the Medieval road on the Eastern part of Civitate A. Both trenches came down on seemingly linear rock features. Additional trenches, CA 72 , 73 , and 74 , were excavated surrounding CA 70 and 71 , and uncovered further linear rock features ( AEG VI , ARR IV , CAC I ). All trenches uncovered significant amounts of slag, from metal working, and fragmentary, but well preserved , architectural terracottas, vitrified terracottas, two crucible fragments ( 20120102 and 20120194 ), and a bellows fragment ( 20120058 ) .

During the 2013 season further trenches were dug in this area to uncover the extent of the linear rock features, evidence of metal working, and to clarify the chronology. In 2013 trenches CA 76 , 78 , CA 79 , CA 77 , CA 72 EXT , CA 73 EXT , CA 80 , CA 81, CA 82 , CA 83 , and CA 84 were excavated. They uncovered what appears to be a rectilinear building with stone foundations dating to the 7th century BC. Numerous pieces of slag, wasters, pottery and other materials were recovered from excavations, suggesting that the area may have been used for metal working and/or habitation.

The goals of excavation for T 61 are:

1. To explore the area immediately to the east of the possible architectural features uncovered in 2012 and 2013.

2. To further clarify the chronology of the area.

3. To potentially reveal new architectural features, stratigraphy, and topographic information

4. To clarify the nature and extent of metal working in the area

5. To better understand and explore the relationship between the area of Civitate A, excavated in 2012 and 2013, and the monumental structures from Pian del Tesoro.
