Pick pass completed in the western meter strip as well as to the north. Soil sorted and cleaned, soil type remains consistent with Locus 2. Area in center of trench where rock feature was troweled down to trench level. Soil sorted and cleaned, remained consistent with Locus 2 soil type. In troweling and cleaning carbon inclusions and increase in material occurring. Also found special find—incised pottery.

Pick pass done in southeast corner also to level trench. Soil sorted and cleaned, type remains consistent with Locus 2. Pick pass completed west of stone feature area for leveling purposes. Soil sorted and cleared, remains consistent with Locus 2 soil. Pick pass through eastern meter strip, 5-7cm deep. Soil sorted and cleaned from trench. Soil still consistent with Locus 2 type. In cleaning
discovered special find—rocchetto—which may match rocchetto found yesterday (pg 53).

Material seems sparing in northeast and southeast corners, as well as western meter strip (though that may be due to roots and stumps making progress slow). Material concentrated in center of the east meter strip area as well as near center of trench. During cleaning still for eastern meter pick pass special find—ridged pottery.

Pick pass done in southern meter strip. Soil sorted and cleaned, type remains consistent with Locus 2. Western meter strip pick axed, soil sorted and cleaned. Soil type still Locus 2.

Decided to remove stumps in western meter. Using pick pass undercut and cleaned roots, sorting and removing soil periodically as necessary. Little material found. In cleaning dirt from under the stump in western meter spotted carbon inclusions in soil much like grape seeds. Soil sample collected. Two stumps removed, three remain. Trench covered with plastic for the night.
