Daily Log Entry for 6 July 2010
TUESDAY, 6 JULY 2010
MORNING : Took opening photos of Locus 3 , also took Munsell Reading of Locus 3 soil.
Locus 3 Opening:
(see diagram on pg 49 of JRV-III)
Locus 3 Opening Elevations:
NW Corner: 153 cm BD = 28.47 m abs elev
NE Corner: 165 cm BD = 28.35 m abs elev
SE Corner: 136 cm BD = 28.64 m abs elev
SW Corner: 135 cm BD = 28.65 m abs elev
Center: 152 cm BD = 28.48 m abs elev
Locus 3 extends throughout the entire trench, so no opening coordinates were taken.
Locus 3 Munsell Reading:
Dry: 10 YR 3/3 dark brown
Wet: 10 YR 3/2 very dark grayish brown
Locus 3 Munsell Coordinates:
(11.57 W, 16.62 N), 150 cm BD = 28.50 m abs elev
Locus 2 Closing Coordinates:
1. (10.07 W, 17.11 N)
144 cm BD = 28.56 m abs elev
2. (11.26 W, 15.12 N)
154 cm BD = 28.46 m abs elev
After opening Locus 3 , a pick pass was completed in the NW corner of the trench, mostly to see what the soil was like. It is consistent with soil in the rest of the trench, but is maybe darker w/ a grayish tint. This may also be due to the fact that the soil is almost always in the shade and receives less sun than the eastern part of the trench. A small number of terracotta fragments (ca. 20) were recovered as was 1 sherd of pottery. All were very worn & small (ca 2-3 cm long), and most do not even preserve the flat surface of a roofing tile. The soil still contains small thin roots and larger roots from the nearby stumps. Another pick pass was completed in the area between the two stumps and the rock in the middle of the trench. Light picking was also done in the area of the rocks just north of the tree. These feel loose, so they are probably not exposed bedrock. Soil was consistent with that from the first pick pass, but was a little finer, and did not form as clumpy
dirt clods. Both pick passes have produced clayey soil. Also uncovered from the second pick pass was a piece of what appears to be worked chert. (Find #1). Some more terracotta was recovered as well, and it is still worn and small. A third pickpass was completed in the area south of the of the rock in the center of the trench and was about a meter wide. Additional terracotta was found, still small & worn, otherwise the soil is consistent with the rest of Locus 3 . After picking, the soil was trowelled down in the area of the those same rocks just north of the tree. After defining, some of these rocks do appear to be bedrock, but the rest of the trench must be lowered to confirm this. Soil was also trowelled away from the rock near the center of the trench was appears to be floating. A light pickpass in the SW corner & subsequent defining with trowels revealed more possible bedrock. So far the soil has remained consistent and finds continue to consist of small & worn chunks of terracotta. Three lighter pickpasses were completed in the SE corner, in order to level the floor of the trench. The soil is more brown than the western part of the trench but is otherwise the same and contains small numbers of very worn
terracotta. The removal of dirt has exposed more rocks jutting out of the S baulk wall. In the 20 minutes before lunch, additional dirt was removed from the vicinity of the SW stump and some roots were clipped.
Morning Finds:
Find #1
Worked Chert
(12.87 W, 17.08 N)
155 cm BD = 28.45 m abs. elev.
AFTERNOON: After lunch the area of ca. 16 N 17 N from the northern stump & the boundary stone to the E edge of the trench was picked. This was done in order to level the floor of the trench. The soil is brown and contains roots, both larger tree roots & thinner roots. Terracotta & a few sherds of ceramic were recovered. Except for a finer texture the soil is otherwise consistent with Locus 3 . Another 2 pick passes were made in the SE corner of the trench, also in order to level the floor, & to lower it so it can be determined if the rocks to the north of the tree are actually bedrock. During the course of sorting dirt the exposed rock at circa (11 E, 16 W) was lifted. The next pick pass revealed additional rocks (possibly bedrock?) beneath it. Some more
terracotta and tree roots were uncovered. In the first pick pass after lunch & the second in the SE corner 1 diagnostic rim was found. After that the middle area of the trench in between the two stumps and the central rock was picked. More soil typical of Locus 3 , brown & clayey, was removed. Some more small & worn terracotta was uncovered. A small amorphous lump of bronze (Find #2) was recovered near of the rocks jutting out of the S baulk. A final pick pass was completed in ca. 16.5 N 17.5 N from the E baulk to the northern stump. No artifacts were recovered, but the soil was typical of Locus 3, - brown and clayey with roots both thin and thick.
Find #2
Bronze
(12.03 W, 15.46 N)
150 cm BD = 28.50 m abs elev)

ca 75 pcs terracotta, (ca 1/4 bowl)
Clo sing Elevations :
NW Corner: 163 cm BD = 28.37 m abs elev.
SE Corner: 147 cm BD = 28.53 m abs elev.
SW Corner: 147 cm BD = 28.53 m abs elev.
Center: 151 cm BD = 28.49 m abs elev.
