The layer under the carbon layer in CD 1-6 was provisionally cleaned and swept.  In all it produced 1 box of tiles, 2 strawberry cartons of sherds, and 1 of bones.  One very fine bucchero sherd might have an incised letter or scratch mark.

Work was continued in grid AB which had previously been excavated as far as level A.

AB 5-6 produced in its first layer (top layer of str. D- burnt (carbon) layer) 1 box of tiles and 1 strawberry carton of sherds.

AB 1-4 produced tiles- 2 boxes- and some sherds.  In B2 one large section of a pan tile was found lying right up against the wall

with the edge parallel to the wall.

The second layer of stratum D was started in AB 5-6.  It produced 1 box of good pottery- bucchero- 1 small spindle whorl- and 1 base of a vase fired brown with a round knob sticking up in the center of the inside.  This second layer consists of a dark soil with some traces of carbon.  Most of the pieces found show traces of burning.  The upper layer on the other hand was extremely black, esp. in B 4-6 with particles of a grainy red soil which might have been burnt clay.
