Description: 

Locus 41 is a collapse layer positioned north of the OC2/Workshop floor.  Frequent small stones were included in the layer, possibly functioning as a cobbling, paving, or surface preparation layer.  

Locus 41’s collapse is composed of a tile fall of broken terracotta roof tiles that extend across the entire locus in the area north of the OC2/Workshop floor. The tiles overlie the northern edge of the OC2/Workshop floor (Locus 39). The tiles are coursed, with two layers of tile exposed. In the area between the tiles, the soil is a pinkish brown color. Frequent plaster is visible throughout the layer within the tile packing. The tile packing appears to lie on a darker brown soil which was revealed in the central meter of the trench and left unexcavated. Two large inclusions of carbon are visible between the tiles, the first at 26.68 mAE and the second at 26.67 m AE. The tile fall is more densely concentrated as it extends to the north.

Locus 41 is equal to Locus 24, the tile fall excavated in 2023 to the east of the 2024 trench. Locus 41 was left unexcavated. Further excavation is needed to determine the depth of the layer, the positioning of the tiles, and the possible relationship to the depression found in 2022 to the east.
