Introduction

The area to be excavated, designated as Tesoro Trench 19 "north extension," lies to the north of the north wall of the monumental building complex.  The area was first excavated in 1972 by J. Neils ( JN I ).  The adjacent area, T 18 "north extension" and T 19 I/31-35 were excavated in 1975 ( GW III ).  T 19 "north extension" grids N-P/31-35 and J-P/36-43 were excavated in 1976 ( GW IV ).

Now visible are the foundation walls of three rooms, one in T18 (hereafter Room 1) and two in T19 (hereafter Rooms 2 and 3, from west to east respectively).  Room 1 has been excavated down to bedrock.  Room 2 has been excavated down to below the level of the foundation walls.  A test cut in 1976 showed that there is more

material underneath this room.  Room 3, whose exact dimensions have not been exactly delineated, produced vast quantities of pottery in 1976, both fine and courseware; much of the pottery was left in the ground in 1976 and covered with earth for the winter.  The first task this season will be to clean down this area and to remove the exposed pottery.
