A.M.

We began the morning with pick passes in all meters, sorting into a wheelbarrow.  We are finding lots of terracotta and worn pottery.  A handle fragment was revocered in close association with several other medium sized body sherds.  The pieces were not intact but appear to belong to the same vessel.  It does not seem to preserve a profile.

In the mid-morning, locus 2 was closed and the gray, clayish locus 3 was opened.  Locus two consisted entirely of medium brown soil with a fair amount of rock and root inclusions.  A large quantity of very worn terracotta and very worn pottery were found in the upper portion of locus 2, but less was recovered as the locus continued to be removed.  Closing depths on locus two were taken in the corners as follows:

A total of 2.5 casseta of terracotta were recovered in locus 2, as well as the following pottery from today:

one bucchero rim

two impasto body fragments

eight coarseware body fragments

one coarseware handle attachment/rim

one coarseware handle with several associated body fragments

one bucchero strap handle fragment

two buccheriod body fragments

Locus 3 was continued in the afternoon.  So far it has produced very little material.  It remains grayish and hard through several pick passes and it easily crumbles when shovelled and sorted.  At the end of the afternoon, we trimmed the northernmost baulk wall to clarify the stratigraphy (55S wall).  Work in locus 3 will continue next week.  Today, locus 3 produced 1/4 casseta of very worn, small terracotta pieces and the following pottery:

3 pieces impasto: two rims, one base

1 piece coarseware, possible handle
