Relatively few metals were recovered from T90 in the 2023 season; in total, we found 20 metal fragments. This is in keeping with the quantities of metal recovered from T90 in 2019, but is significantly more than was found in 2017, 2018, and 2022.
All metals recovered were either bronze or iron fragments. In total, 13 bronze objects and 7 iron objects were found in T90 in 2023. Notable bronze finds include a fibula pin (PC20230035) and an intact arc fibula (PC20230097), both found in deposits associated with the abandonment and destruction of EPOC4. Within deposits infilling the Locus 47 rectangular cut, we recovered a bronze sheet fragment (PC20230115). Iron finds include four examples of nails (PC20230034, PC20230038, PC20230044, PC20230113) and an unidentified iron fragment (PC20230123); two of the nails came from deposits associated with the abandonment and destruction of EPOC4 (PC20230034, PC20230038), while the other two were found inside of the Locus 47 cut (PC20230044, PC20230113). It is inviting to imagine that these nails once held together something made of an ephemeral material – perhaps something wooden – that once was placed in the Locus 47 cut, although this has not been proven in 2023.
The majority of metals recovered from T90 in 2023 came from deposits associated with the abandonment and destruction of EPOC4; in total, 11 of the 20 total fragments, or 55%, were found from such deposits. Only one metal was found in a deposit associated with the small, rectilinear hut built over EPOC4, while 8 metal fragments were recovered from deposits within the rectangular cut of Locus 47.
