Summary
In general, trench 2D was a productive area.
Although a maximum of five fruit boxes of tile a day was dumped and no more than 4 boxes of sherds in all were saved, 2D yielded 25 finds during the 14 days of excavation.
The east wall of the trench showed a greater variety of stratification level than other profiles in the Civitate complex. The stratification level, noted on p. 15 , can be described as follows:
- A1: coarse brown topsoil
- A2: distinguished from A1 by its greater solidity
- B1: dry grey soil, with small stones, at a general depth of 0.35 m
- B2: darker soil, and heavier concentration of layer stones, corresponding to a level of unexcavated stones uncusioned above
- B3: light brown soil of a heavy consistency, with very few stones
- C1: yellow soil, at a general depth of 1.15 m
- C2: fine and solidly packed earth, yellower than that of C1
All stratum levels meander upwards as they approach galestra in
the south end of the trench.
Galestra in the south end, bedrock in the middle, and virgin soil in the north end determined the depth of excavation.
Most of the finds were located directly under the level of stratum B2, marked by the concentration of stones in the north end. Material nearer the bottom of stratum C was confined to bones, carbon, and sherds, excluding the galestra in the south end.
A higher proportion of architectural fragments than pottery sherds was found.
