AM

The morning began in Locus 1, using hand picks to further investigate the extent of the burn lauer found yesterday. Meanwhile, the floor edge was defined and photos were taken. Debris from Locus 1 was sorted by hand into buckets, and materials found include terracotta tile fragments, as well as smaller amounts of pottery and bone. Among these was a small seashell fragment (Special Find #7).

During the process of defining the floor, a burn layer was discovered underneath the floor surface. It is unclear at this time whether it is contiguous with the burn layer found in the western portion of Locus 1.

The floor was removed by making cuts with a pickaxe and picking underneath. Three buckets’ worth of soil and debris from under the [37] floor were reserved for floatation. The burn layer continues under the floor, and this soil was sorted into buckets, revealing plaster with impressions (Special Find #8) and vitrified terracotta (Special Find #9).

Meanwhile, baulk walling was done to tidy up Locus 1. This revealed some vitrified terracotta (Special Find #10).

The remainder of the morning was spent using handpicks and trowels to lower portions of Locus 2 to find a uniform level for a new locus appearing. This effort to reveal the area in question revealed a number of finds including pieces of vitrified terracotta (Special Find #11, Special Find #13), a piece of ridged pottery (Special Find #12), and a piece of diagnostic bone (Special Find #14).
